Reiki (pronounced ray-key), is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.
It is a non-diagnostic, non-intrusive, natural healing system which treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit.
Reiki means ‘Universal Life-Force Energy’, an energy which is all around us. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Reiki practitioners are able to channel the Universal Life-Force Energy to heal themselves and others.
Reiki energy is a safe, gentle, powerful energy which can help to heal mind, body and spirit. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to promote recovery.
History
Reiki first started at the turn of the century by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese doctor. Dr Usui was inspired to develop this healing system from ancient teachings after many years of study, research and meditation. Dr Usui spent the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki. Today Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student. How does it work?
Reiki is a form of touch therapy in which the therapist uses both the ‘laying on’ of hands and distant healing techniques. It works on the principle that all illnesses and states of diseases in our lives are created first in the energy field around our body, they then show up in our physical body. The therapist treats those parts of the body he or she senses are emitting weak energy, by laying his or her hands close to the site of the problem, this enables energy to start to flow through the therapist’s hands to the patient. Once our energies are in balance and flowing freely, our body can begin to heal itself. The treatment
Treatments take place in a warm comfortable, safe environment. The calming, peaceful music, soft, gentle lighting and soothing aromas combine to create a place where you can completely relax and let go of your troubles for a while.Patients lie fully clothed on a massage table or couch to facilitate their relaxation. The therapist’s hands rest lightly in a sequence of positions on the patient’s body, the aim being to provide a gentle warming vital energy. As they do this, the Reiki energy begins to flow.
The treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. The patient may feel hot, cold, tingling or other sensations as the Reiki flows and if they are in pain, they may experience a dulling of the pain. Patients are fully conscious during the treatment, although many people find it so relaxing, they drift off to sleep. After treatment patients feel very calm, comfortable and relaxed and many find that this feeling lasts for a few days.
