A common saying is that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, and many have their own opinions about what or who is beautiful. On a psycho-social level some believe that “beauty is only skin deep” where a person's character is more important than their appearance. Facial beauty can be a matter of personal taste, but remarkably – and controversially – people do seem to agree on which faces are considered beautiful.
Personality traits such as intelligence, friendliness or kindness can radiate and create an impression of attractiveness and beauty – we are all encouraged to develop ourselves in this regard.
We are all beautiful in different ways and beauty evokes different feelings, such as envy, lust or true affection. Our individual reactions to beauty are unpredictable because beauty can be multi-faceted.
Our inner beauty is what makes us who we are, but this is not always on show. There is an expectation that physical or external beauty should be noticed by others and in today’s media-influenced society, the way we look matters; first impressions count and we all want to
look our best!
What is beauty?
