Alopecia areata is the term used for the particular type of hair loss which occurs suddenly in oval patches in the scalp of children of adults. They are very bald and usually not itchy and may be multiple or single. It can occur in any hairy area. The cause is not known but it can be hereditary. In most cases the hair grows back usually with fine white hair at first and then the original terminal hair comes back. In rare cases all the hair is lost and that is called alopecia totalis.
