Intense Pulse Light Laser (IPL) for Leg and Facial Veins

Lasers emit coherent energy at a specific wavelength in a single beam of light. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is broadband light energy that enables large areas to be treated with a single discharge. This short wavelength visible light is passed through filters which can be adjusted to match the patients' skin types. Intense Pulsed Light, in combination with laser, is ideal for the treatment of superficial skin lesions. The advantage of IPL and laser combined is that large areas can be treated quickly.

Are all IPL laser machines the same?

IPL is a generic name and the quality of the machine does determine the effectiveness of the treatment. There are different types and quality of machines designed for different markets. For example, the non-medical (beauty salons, aesthetic salons) rarely use the medical grade machines because these machines are designed for use by a medical practioner. Hence an IPL machine designed for the non medial market will most probably be less effective than a medical grade IPL machine which must be used by medical professionals and the premises must be approved by the Health Care Commission.

Will any IPL machine give the similar results?

No. The quality of the machine and the training of the clinician are directly related to the results achieved. One should not just compare prices of the treatment, it is important that you receive treatment from a medial facility with High Grade Medical IPL equipment.

How does the treatment work?

IPL- The laser light is absorbed by the blood inside the vein. This heats up the wall of the vein which collapses, and the vein then dissolves.

How many treatments are needed?

A series of 3 to 6 treatments is recommended at monthly intervals for leg veins. Treatment of facial veins is easier and often only 1 or 2 treatments are required.

Are there any side-effects?

Redness and swelling of the treated area may occur (like sunburn). Superficial blistering or crusting may rarely develop, this settles within a few days. There is also a very small risk of pigment change following treatment

Is IPL Treatment safe?

There is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that IPL treatment can lead to skin disorders or an increased risk of skin cancer. The Pearl Studios is registered with the Healthcare Commission, ensuring the highest level of safety for our patients.
