Male Grooming

Male grooming

The modern day man is no stranger to the idea of undergoing treatments to make themselves look and feel better.

What’s more the modern day woman appreciates a man taking care of himself, from going to the gym to trimming unwanted nasal hair.

It is now a widely accepted part of life that men want to remove unwanted hair, enjoy having a facial and even like having their “Qi” sorted out, and why shouldn’t they?

Similarities exist between men and women with regards to the regular removal of unwanted hair from various parts of the body, which could involve the daily hassle of having to shave using razors or hair removal creams. Both sexes show degrees of susceptibility to ingrown hairs or irritation to sensitive skin, especially on the face.

Historically women have been exposed to a wider range of hair removal methods, such as waxing, electrolysis and laser hair removal, which have recently become more acceptable in male circles. So if you are a man and you are not getting on with your razor, it is imperative that you are aware of the alternatives.

Wet or dry shave? Whats the difference?

  WET RAZOR ELECTRIC SHAVER
EASE OF USE No power required
Very portable
Needs power supply
Portable but sometimes
too bulky
SPEED Slow, requires skin
preparation & care
Fast, requires little
preparation & is fool proof
CLOSENESS Gives very close,
clean shaving results
Not as close as a razor but
this may be beneficial
for acne sufferers
RISK OF CUTS Blunt blades and shaky
hand will cause damage!
Protective foils prevent
nicks & cuts
SKIN IRRITATION Micro-cuts & scrapes can occur while shaving causing irritation Only poor technique or badly designed ‘cheap’ shavers will cause irritation

Here is some guidance from The Beauty Society on how to achieve the perfect shave:

  1. Firstly, the best place to shave is in the shower. The steam will cause the hairs to soften, which will ultimately give you a closer shave.
  2. Exfoliate your skin using a facial scrub such as Dermatologic Cosmetic Laboratories balancing cleanser just before you shave as this will help to get rid of any dead skin cells and open up the pores.
  3. An Aloe Vera based shaving cream, when thoroughly massaged into the stubble, will help to prevent razor rashes and burns.
  4. Always use a sharp blade, as a blunt one is the principal reason for shaving cuts!
  5. Shave in the direction that the hair is growing in, as shaving “against the grain” causes redness, rashes, razor burns and ingrown hairs, which are all painful.
  6. Finish with a moisturiser. Some men prefer alcohol or menthol based aftershaves as they give a stinging or cooling sensation, but these products are irritating to many complexions.

Wet shave

Male grooming however, doesn’t just involve shaving. Some men do not feel that all of the treatments available out there are suitable for them. This is simply untrue.

Intense Pulse Light Laser Technology (IPL) is a popular choice for both men and women to permanently remove unwanted hair. It works by sending a pulse of light down the hair shaft, which is then converted to heat, destroying the hair follicle without damaging the epidermis.

Men can also be affected by skin conditions such as acne, and when scarring is left this can hugely affect your self confidence. Medical Microdermabrasion provides the answer in a powerful exfoliate, which effectively and safely removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin. A vacuum is also used to encourage collagen production for a fresher look. If you do suffer from active acne lesions you should see a dermatologist or a skin specialist who can recommend an appropriate treatment to resolve the condition.

Perhaps you’ve had a hectic few months at work, and your face has begun looking tired. The best way to combat the consequences of stresses and strains on your skin is through clinical facials and skin peels. This may sound daunting but in actual fact these are safe, reversible treatments when used appropriately. We have a huge range available and all of them are suitable for men.
