For as long as can be remembered, full lips with an accentuated border have been associated with beauty and youth. Some say that the tendancy for humans to focus on the lips is derived from the way in which the lips occupy both sides of the face and, together with the smile, constitute a major focal point of overall facial beauty.Unfortunately as part of the ageing process, our lips begin to thin and lose definition, with fine lines also forming around the lips and at the corners (often referred to as smoker’s lines, but can also occur in non-smokers). Lip enhancement can help give you more definition to your lips and a more alluring and youthful look.
Following a consultation with one of our plastic or cosmetic surgeons, it may be determined that you would need surgical lip enhancement. You can be assured that treatments have moved on since initial experiments into lip enhancement, around the 1900s, when surgeons, unsuccessfully, attempted to inject parrafin into patient’s lips. In fact, the surgeons at The Beauty Society utilise more advanced treatments than prehistoric collagen injections – because collagen does not last very long and also requires an allergy test, causing the patient to wait at least three weeks before another appointment, with even more waiting required to see cosmetic results.
At The Beauty Society, a variety of treatments are avaible for lip enhancement and your surgeon is likely to recommend injectable fillers, fat transfers or permalip:
- Injectable fillers are frequently used for lip enhancement and they typically contain substances such as hyaluronic acid. A popular filler is Restylane®, which is a non-animal, clear gel that is reported to be very close to the hyaluronic acid found naturally in the body. The results usually lasts six months and sometimes, longer, with the main benefit of injectables being that the patient can immediately return to their normal day-to-day activities.
- Fat transfer is when a surgeon harvests, through liposuction or excision, your own fat from sites on your body where fat can be spared and either injected or surgically placed into the lips.
- Permalip is a permanent lip enhancement solution, which involves the insertion of a soft, solid silicone elastomer into the lip, using an injection molding process to produce a naturally contoured implant with a smooth, non-porous surface. It cannot deflate or rupture, and although permanent, can be easily removed should a patient desire to have it removed or re-sized. The patient will experience one to two weeks of variable swelling after which they can enjoy beautiful, full lips for years to come.
