Cryosurgery (also referred to as cryotherapy) is the application of extreme cold to destroy abnormal or diseased tissue and can be used to treat a number of diseases and disorders, especially a variety of benign and malignant skin conditions.

Cryosurgery is a minimally invasive procedure that can be used for problems, such as warts, moles, skin tags, solar keratoses, and small skin cancers. Cryosurgery can also be used to treat several internal disorders including liver cancer, prostate cancer and cervical disorders.

Cryosurgery works by taking advantage of the destructive effect of freezing temperatures on cells. Ice crystals form inside the cells, which tears them apart and freezes the blood vessels that supply the diseased tissue. This destroys it therefore allowing it to be removed by the practitioner. Liquid nitrogen is commonly used as the cooling solution for freezing lesions. The super-cooled liquid may be sprayed on the diseased tissue, circulated through a tube called a cryoprobe, or simply dabbed on with a cotton or foam swab.
