Do you ever get up in the morning, look at yourself in the mirror and sigh in despair? Is it because no matter what you try, your eyes persist in making you look ill, stressed, tired or old? If you feel this way, the solution could be eyelid surgery (often referred to as blepharoplasty). This procedure can reshape your upper and/or lower eyelids. It is done by removing or repositioning excess tissue, as well as by reinforcing surrounding muscles and tendons.
Reasons for eyelid surgery
Eyelid surgery is usually an option for patients who have functional or cosmetic problems around the eyes. An example of a functional eyelid problem would be the prescence of excess skin on the upper eyelid hanging over the eyelashes causing a reduction in peripheral vision. This can sometimes result in interferance with activities such as driving and reading. The same procedure may be undertaken for cosmetic reasons, where you are looking for a more youthful or rejuvenated appearance. Lower eyelid surgery is almost always performed for cosmetic reasons, to improve puffy lower eyelids (a.k.a. eyebags), dark circles and reduce wrinkly skin. What it involves
Eyelid surgery is performed with the aim of leaving no scars. This is achieved through incisions made along the natural skin lines of the eyelids, such as the creases of the eyelids, below the lashes of the lower lids, or from the inner surface of the lower eyelid. Following surgery there might be a little swelling and bruising, which may take one to two weeks to resolve, but several months are needed until the final result becomes stable. Depending upon the scope of the procedure, the operation takes one to three hours to complete and can be carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation (you are not put to sleep). The cosmetic and functional outcomes of the operation can be affected by your bone structure, skin quality and age. Our plastic and cosmetic surgeons at The Beauty Society will incorporate these factors with the patient’s aims to achieve the optimum treatment plan.
